Occupants declare Nikitsky Botanical Garden "federal"

The Russian government, by its Resolution No. 461 of April 8, 2025, granted the Nikitsky Botanical Garden in the occupied Crimea the status of a botanical garden of "federal significance". The created natural territory under special protection will be under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

According to the authorities of the occupying state, the "federal status" will ensure the special protection of the botanical garden and create conditions for organizing research and developing the potential of "one of the oldest scientific centers in Russia".

In addition, the occupiers report that the total area of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden, together with sites in Alushta, Simferopol and Dzhankoy districts, is almost 885 hectares; it contains more than 17 thousand species of plants, including southern fruit crops, ornamental trees and medicinal plants.

For reference. Nikitsky Botanical Garden was founded in 1812 by botanist Christian Steven, with the status of "imperial state garden".

Before the Russian occupation of Crimea, it was under the jurisdiction of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine as a national research center.

In December 2001, the arboretum, and in September 2009, the Crimean collection of the herbarium of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden were included in the state register of scientific objects that constitute the national achievement of Ukraine
