Mechanisms for overcoming the consequences of the occupation of Crimea: what has already been developed and what needs to be developed

In his turn, the Head of the Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol Igor Ponochovny noted that he believes that all those responsible for the occupation of the peninsula will be brought to justice.

The Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine Macej Jancsak noted that the Register of Damages should help bring those responsible for crimes in Ukraine to justice.

Head of the Center for Civic Education "Almenda" Maria Sulyalina pointed out that according to the occupation authorities, more than 500 thousand children currently live in Crimea. Among them, 283 thousand are school-age children. Since 2014, the first thing the Russian Federation did was completely transfer the education system to Russian standards.

Sulyanina added that in 2014, before the occupation, 100% of children in Crimea studied Ukrainian. As of now, according to the occupiers, this figure is only 0.5% in the format of an optional course. The situation with access to the Crimean Tatar language is also negative.

The head of the CHRG pointed out that in 2016, the Unarmy reported that there were 40 children in its ranks in Sevastopol. In 2024, it was reported about 17 thousand children in Sevastopol alone. In addition, 11 years of occupation means 11 school leavers. According to the Russian Federation, it is 131 thousand children who have graduated from schools. During the period of 2014-23, only 4% of children from Crimea received Ukrainian documents through the Ukrainian education system.
