Government supports use of new spelling of Crimean Tatar language

On April 4, 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine took an important step towards preserving the linguistic identity of the Crimean Tatar people. This was informed by the Representative Office of the President in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

It is reported that the CMU supported the proposal submitted by the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience to use the new spelling of the Crimean Tatar language, which was approved by the National Commission on the Crimean Tatar Language.
"The spelling is based on the alphabet approved in September 2021 and provides for the use of Latin script, which corresponds to modern linguistic trends and the historical tradition of the Crimean Tatar language," the Ombudsman's Office in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea said
The approved rules cover writing, teaching, use in media, literature and toponymy. They are recommended for use by all government agencies

"This decision is of great symbolic and practical importance: it not only ensures the realization of the rights of the indigenous people of Ukraine, but also supports intercultural dialogue in a multinational state," the Ombudsman's Office in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea informs.

It is noted that the transition of the Crimean Tatar language to the Latin script has been ongoing since Ukraine gained independence, and this process has already been completed.
