Resistance began from the day Ukraine gained independence, - Shchekun

On Friday, February 21, Ukraine Crisis Media Center hosted a press conference of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center dedicated to the Day of Resistance to the Occupation of Crimea, which is annually marked on February 26.

Representative of the Crimean Ukrainian Council Andriy Shchekun spoke about the situation with the Ukrainian language on the occupied peninsula:

Shchekun emphasized that the public organization is now working on and documenting the facts of who commits these crimes. In 2024, thanks to such activities, two criminal proceedings were opened against two "ministers of education".

He also recalled two decisions of international courts in 2024, namely On January 31, 2024, the International Court of Justice ruled on discrimination against education in the state language and other aspects of human rights violations in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. The second, dated June 25, 2024, is the decision of the European Court of Human Rights, which spelled out the facts of discrimination against education in the Crimean Tatar and Ukrainian languages.

The KRUK representative added that the resistance did not begin on February 26, 2014, or on February 20, or March 9. The resistance began from the day Ukraine declared its independence.
